Moisture and climate control is the biggest concern when remodeling your basement. Considering that most basements are substantially below ground level it is more than likely the humidity levels are far greater than the living space above and nobody likes to open a basement door to thick humid air. Measures must be taken to ensure the prevention of mold and the potential that ground water will saturate your newly remodeled basement. Its not worth the effort to finish your basement if everything starts to gathers mold a month later. Your basement may require a sump-pump, vapor barrier or a simple dehumidifier that is hard piped so you don't have to empty it.
Radon test your basement. This is a simple and inexpensive test that you can do yourself by purchasing a kit at your local hardware store for approx $10 and is well worth the investment. Visit the NJDEP website for a map of the risk in your area. Radon gasses can be a seriously health hazard and this test should be done regardless of risk. If radon is found in excess, a radon mitigation and abatement system may be a necessary feature of your basement remodeling project to maintain a healthy environment for your family.
Lighting is a key element when designing a basement. It is always best to use as much natural light as possible but in cases where it isn't accessible, halogen bulbs with a tungsten filament or LED bulbs is a good choice as they produces light that our eyes are better designed to filter (no headaches). When choosing a light source for your basement it is a good idea to choose a bulb with a high Color Rendering Index (CRI) such as a full spectrum light that has a rating of 89-100 CRIs
Drop ceilings or acoustical ceilings are usually the best choice for finishing your basement ceiling, but they are not necessary. If your thinking that an acoustical ceiling is too industrial looking then we are in agreement but it may be the only option in some cases. Take a good look at all pipes, vent dampers, wiring, etc. that will need to be accessed in the future. If your ceiling doesn't contain any of these elements than your basement might be a candidate for a sheetrocked ceiling. Also consider that a pipe leak will ruin drywall and it will have to be removed and patched but an acoustical ceiling provides easy access to pinpoint the leak and an inexpensive fix of simply replacing a tile or two.
Consider this advise when planning your basement renovation project. It will create a comfortable environment that your family will be able to enjoy for years to come.
